Unfair Airbnb Review? How Removal Works and What You Can Do
Updated Oct 31, 2026 · Mike Corrales
One review sits on your listing for every future guest to read, and an unfair one can weigh on how your home is found and booked. Airbnb says reviews “may only be removed from our platform in limited circumstances,” so it pays to know exactly where those limits sit. Below is the rulebook, in Airbnb’s own words.
What Airbnb will remove
Under Airbnb’s Reviews Policy, reviews “must be relevant, authentic, trustworthy, and follow our Content Policy.” A review may be removed when it falls into one of six categories:
- Irrelevant. It isn’t about the home that was booked, or it doesn’t reflect the reviewer’s first-hand experience of the stay.
- Fake. “Reviews are fake if they aren’t based on a real reservation.”
- Bias, deception, extortion, incentivization or pressure. For example, a guest who threatens a bad review to get a refund. Airbnb says hosts and guests “may not threaten a negative review as a means to obtain unwarranted compensation, refund, or other incentive.”
- Harming competition. The reviewer is directly affiliated with the listing or in direct competition with it.
- Retaliatory. This is narrow. A review counts only “if the reviewer committed a policy violation, was notified of that violation, and then left a biased review because their own violation was reported.” A review discussing a Resolution Center or AirCover claim “isn’t automatically considered retaliatory.”
- Content Policy violations. Reviews “may not contain explicit, discriminatory, harmful, or illegal content,” as defined in Airbnb’s Content Policy.
If a review breaks the policy, Airbnb “may remove that review, including any associated ratings and other content.” Once a review is removed, the reviewer can’t write a new one for that reservation.
What Airbnb won’t remove
Airbnb notes that its policy “is informed by consumer laws that apply to online reviews.” Its common examples that don’t qualify:
- Disagreement with the star rating, even when the text says “Nice home and great stay” beside three stars.
- Factors outside the host’s control, such as a noisy neighborhood, which may still help future guests.
- Subjective opinions, like “The kitchen was small and cramped.”
“If a review written about you does not violate this policy, it will remain published.”
The no-show review
The clearest case in the policy is a guest who never came. Airbnb’s wording is direct: “If a guest never arrived for their reservation or chose to cancel due to circumstances unrelated to the offering they booked, their review will be considered irrelevant because it isn’t based on first-hand experience of the offering.”
Hosts have reported that requests like this aren’t always approved the first time. The written policy is still the standard to cite. Quote it exactly and let the reservation record make the case.
How to file a removal request
Airbnb’s Remove or dispute a review page lays out six steps on desktop:
- Click Get started.
- Select the review. Airbnb’s tip: search using words from the review, because the reviewer’s name “may not work.”
- Select the reason that matches the policy category.
- Explain why the review breaks the policy. Name the category and quote the line the review breaks.
- Upload supporting documentation. Leave out “government IDs, health data, or details about children or criminal history. Any such information won’t be considered.”
- Click Submit.
Airbnb says it will “email you our decision, usually within 48 hours.” You can submit a request for the same review “up to two times,” so make the first one complete. Hosts can dispute a review they received at any time. You can also contact Airbnb directly and ask a team member to review the request.
The rules bind hosts too. Never offer a discount, refund or reciprocal review in exchange for a review, and never pressure a guest about what they write. Airbnb can “restrict, suspend, or remove” a listing or account for violations. Rules like these keep changing; see our guide to Airbnb’s Nov 20 host rules.
When removal isn’t an option: the public response
Airbnb says it “generally doesn’t mediate disputes concerning review accuracy.” Instead, hosts can post a public response, which, per Airbnb’s response guide, “will be posted immediately” beside the review on your listing. Write it for the guests still deciding whether to book:
- Thank the guest and acknowledge the specific point.
- Add one factual line of context, such as a repair made the same day.
- Keep it short. Don’t argue the rating, and don’t mention money or refunds.
- Share no guest details and nothing that identifies the home’s address.
How Allura handles reviews
We know Airbnb’s Reviews Policy well. When a review clearly falls into one of its categories, we file a well-documented request through Airbnb’s own process and cite the policy by name. When it doesn’t, we write a measured public response in the home’s own voice. Airbnb makes every removal decision, so we never promise one. Each home is run to the standard behind our Airbnb Superhost and Vrbo Premier Host status. For another channel, see how we approach Vrbo’s 12% commission.
FAQ
Can you get an unfair Airbnb review removed?
Sometimes. Airbnb removes reviews only in limited circumstances, when a review breaks its Reviews Policy. That covers reviews that are irrelevant, fake, coercive, competitive, retaliatory or in violation of the Content Policy. A review that feels unfair but still follows the policy stays published. Airbnb makes every removal decision.
What reviews does Airbnb remove?
Airbnb’s Reviews Policy lists six categories: irrelevant reviews, fake reviews, reviews involving bias, extortion or pressure, reviews meant to harm competition, retaliatory reviews, and reviews that violate the Content Policy. If a review breaks the policy, Airbnb may remove it along with its ratings, and may act against the account responsible.
Will Airbnb remove a review from a guest who never checked in?
It can. Airbnb’s policy says that if a guest never arrived, or canceled for reasons unrelated to the home, their review “will be considered irrelevant because it isn’t based on first-hand experience of the offering.” Quote that line in your request and attach the reservation record. Airbnb still makes the final call.
Will Airbnb remove a review because I disagree with the star rating?
No. Airbnb says a review won’t be removed solely because of disagreement with the star rating, even when glowing text sits beside three stars. Subjective opinions and factors outside the host’s control, like a noisy neighborhood, usually don’t qualify either. Here, a calm public response does more good.
How do I file an Airbnb review removal request?
Open Airbnb’s Help Center article on removing or disputing a review and click Get started. Select the review, choose the reason, explain why it breaks the policy, upload supporting documentation and submit. Airbnb says it emails a decision usually within 48 hours. You can request removal of the same review up to two times.
What evidence helps a review dispute?
Airbnb asks for supporting documentation, so attach facts that match the policy category you name. Useful examples include the reservation status, Airbnb message threads or check-in records. Leave out government IDs, health data, and details about children or criminal history; Airbnb says it won’t consider them. Evidence helps your case but can’t promise removal.
Should I respond publicly to a bad Airbnb review?
Usually, yes. Airbnb generally doesn’t mediate disputes over review accuracy and instead lets hosts post a public response. It goes live immediately beside the review. Write it for the next guest: thank them, acknowledge the specific point, add one factual line of context and keep it short. Never argue the rating or mention refunds.
What can a property manager do about unfair reviews?
A manager with the right listing access can file removal requests through Airbnb’s own process, cite the exact policy category, attach clean documentation and write measured public responses. A good manager also plays by the same rules: no offers, threats or pressure tied to a review. No manager can promise removal; Airbnb decides.
